At 87 years old, Margaret Thompson had always been a passionate gardener. At 87 years old, Margaret Thompson had always been a passionate gardener. When she moved to Lakeside Manor last spring, one of her biggest concerns was leaving behind the garden she’d tended for over forty years. But what she found at Lakeside Manor was something even more special – a chance to start a new gardening chapter that would touch the lives of everyone around her.

“I was worried I wouldn’t be able to garden anymore,” Margaret recalls, her eyes brightening as she talks about her beloved hobby. “But when I saw the raised beds in the courtyard, I knew this place understood what matters to people like me.”

A New Beginning

Margaret’s journey with the care home garden began modestly. She started by planting a few herbs in one of the raised beds – rosemary, thyme, and her favorite, lavender. Within weeks, other residents became curious about what she was doing. Soon, Margaret found herself with a small group of fellow gardening enthusiasts, each bringing their own stories and expertise.

“It’s become so much more than just plants,” explains Sarah Mitchell, one of the care staff at Lakeside Manor. “Margaret has created a real community garden. Residents who rarely spoke to each other before are now sharing gardening tips and memories of their own gardens.”

Growing More Than Plants

The impact of Margaret’s garden extends far beyond the courtyard. The herbs she grows are now used in the care home’s kitchen, adding fresh flavors to meals. The vegetables from the summer harvest were shared among residents and their families. Even residents who don’t actively garden find peace sitting among the flowers, enjoying the colors and fragrances.

Dorothy, another resident at Lakeside Manor, visits the garden every afternoon. “I can’t do much of the physical work anymore,” she says, “but Margaret always makes sure I have a comfortable chair right in the middle of everything. We talk about the old days, and she tells me what she’s planning to plant next. It gives me something to look forward to.”

A Living Legacy

What makes Margaret’s garden truly special is how it’s evolving. Local school children now visit regularly as part of their science curriculum, and Margaret has become something of a celebrity among them. She teaches them about companion planting, soil health, and the patience required to grow things from seed.

“The children bring so much energy and joy,” Margaret says with a smile. “And I love that I can pass on what I know. Gardening has given me purpose here. It’s not just about keeping busy – it’s about feeling useful and connected.”
