Westcott Care history: It all started with someone we loved

Westcott Care wasn’t founded in a boardroom or built around a business plan. It began with one family trying to find the right care for someone they loved and discovering just how difficult that journey could be.

“When I watched my parents, both of whom are doctors, struggle to navigate the care system for my grandmother, I realised that families shouldn’t ever have to figure out such a confusing system alone. It’s my own personal experience that shapes the belief that continues to guide Westcott Care today: that care should always treat the person, not the condition.

“Everything we do stems from that simple philosophy, and it’s the foundation of the Westcott Care history. It’s why we take the time to understand every resident as an individual, support every family with honesty and compassion, and create homes where people don’t simply receive care, they continue living the lives that make them who they are.”

Andrew Whelan, Westcott Care Founder

OUR VALUES

It’s the little things that make the biggest difference

The things that matter most in care aren’t always the things you can measure. They’re the everyday moments, thoughtful gestures and personal touches that help our homes feel less like care homes and more like home. These are just some of the ways we bring the Westcott philosophy and our care home values to life.

We take time to know people

Before we provide care, we get to know the person. Their routines, interests, preferred chair, favourite music and the little details that make them who they are.

We create homes, not institutions

From family photographs on the walls, favourite furniture in bedrooms and visits from beloved four-legged friends, we encourage residents to surround themselves with the things that bring comfort and familiarity.

Container 2

We support families too

Moving into care affects the whole family. That's why we're here to offer reassurance, guidance and a friendly face, not just for residents, but for the people who love them too. Whether that’s by explaining funding, helping you understand industry jargon or simply offering an ear when you need it most.

We celebrate everyday life

Birthdays, anniversaries, hobbies, trips out, afternoon tea or simply seeing the sunshine in the garden for the first time in weeks; these are some of the moments we make a fuss about to help make life feel full.

Container 2

We believe care should feel personal

No two people are the same, so no two care plans should be either. Everything we do is shaped around the individual, never a one-size-fits-all approach.

We never stop improving

We listen, learn and continue developing our homes, our people and our care because strong care home values never stand still. We always ask ourselves one simple question: ‘could we make today a little better than yesterday?’

Who is Westcott? Meet founder Andrew Whelan

It all began with one family experience long before our first home opened its doors.

Listen to our founder, Andrew Whelan, explain how his family’s experience inspired a different approach to care, one built on compassion, understanding and seeing the person behind every care need.

REVIEWS

The difference people remember

The little things often leave the biggest impression. Hear from the residents, families and members of the Westcott care team who have experienced Westcott first-hand and discover why our approach to care means so much to the people we support.

“Cartmel Grange is an amazing home. My mum is well cared for by the staff. She has been the happiest I have seen her and having a better quality of life.”

Rachel S

Daughter of Resident – Cartmel Grange

“The whole ethos of the home is based on providing care at the highest level possible. Each member of staff shows that they care about every resident and the home itself is kept to such a standard that it feels more like a quality hotel than a care home.”

Helen R

Daughter of Resident – Clarendon Grange

“The team at Doddlespool made what felt like an impossible decision feel manageable. They were patient, kind, and genuinely cared about finding the right fit for Mum.”

Sarah M.

Daughter of Resident – Doddlespool Hall

Commitment you can count on

Compassion sits at the heart of everything we do at Westcott Care, but it should always be matched by quality and accountability. That’s why our homes work to the recognised standards set by organisations including Care England and the Care Quality Commission, reflecting our ongoing commitment to delivering exceptional care.

Finding the right care isn’t about making quick decisions or fitting people into empty rooms.

It’s about understanding the individual, their circumstances and what matters most to them. That’s exactly what our Westcott Care team and Care Navigation specialists are here to help you do. We’ll take the time to understand your situation and help you find the support that’s right for you, or the person you love.

Every care provider has its own approach, but at Westcott Care, everything begins with getting to know the individual. We believe the best care comes from understanding a person’s routines, interests, life story and the things that make them feel most at home. It’s an approach built around relationships, not routines.

We’re a family-founded care provider built on the belief that everyone deserves to feel known, valued and at home. Rather than focusing solely on care needs, we focus on the person behind them, helping residents continue living meaningful lives with the support that’s right for them.

Our care home values shape every decision we make. We believe in treating people with kindness, listening before acting, supporting families as well as residents, celebrating everyday moments and continually looking for ways to improve the care we provide.

Getting to know someone takes time, and that’s time we’re happy to invest. The Westcott Care team learns about each resident’s preferences, routines, hobbies, family, life experiences and the little things that help them feel comfortable, allowing us to provide care that’s genuinely personal.

Every Westcott Care Home has its own character, surroundings and community, but they all share the same philosophy. Wherever you visit, you’ll find compassionate teams, person-centred care and a commitment to helping residents feel safe, supported and truly at home.

Choosing care is rarely a decision someone makes alone. We know that families often need reassurance, guidance and someone to answer their questions just as much as residents do. That’s why supporting relatives is an important part of the way we care.

We never believe there’s a finish line when it comes to great care. We regularly review the way we work, listen to residents and families, invest in our people and look for opportunities to make every Westcott home an even better place to live and work.

Absolutely. We always encourage prospective residents and families to visit a Westcott Care Home, meet the team, spend time in the home and ask as many questions as they like. Seeing everyday life for yourself is often the best way to decide whether a home feels right.

You don’t need to have all the answers before reaching out. Our Care Navigation specialists will take the time to understand your circumstances, explain the different care options available and help you find the support that’s most appropriate for you or someone you love, without pressure or obligation.

At Westcott Care, we don’t assume the same things matter to everyone. We begin by listening. Through conversations with residents and their families, we learn about a person’s routines, passions, life experiences and the little details that bring them comfort and joy. Those insights shape the care we provide, helping every resident continue living a life that feels familiar, meaningful and true to who they are.
